Train breakdown leads to rare wheel repair operation

Two cranes lift a train to replace its flat wheels.

Did you know trains could get ‘flat wheels’? Though rare, that’s what recently happened at Benalla station.

Local customer officer Phil Rees confirmed the XPT train broke down last month due to flat wheels.

This is where a flat edge develops on the outside of the wheel.

The engine is held aloft by the two cranes.

Contractors were carrying out work on Thursday, October 31, using two cranes to lift the engine for repairs.

The job was expected to wrap up at the end of the day, readying the engine to roll again.

In a rare sight, a train is lifted by cranes for essential wheel replacements at Benalla station.
