A new program is set to provide career changers with an opportunity to transition into social work as rural areas continue to cry out for support in the industry.
The program, launched by the Victorian Government and the Centre for Excellence in Child and Family Welfare in partnership with La Trobe University, aims to address workforce needs while alleviating financial barriers.
The “Switch to Social Work” program, set to commence in 2024, offers an earn-and-learn model, allowing students to gain practical experience in child and family services across metropolitan, regional, and rural Victoria.

Mugabi Ahsley Achilleo:
“I am an immigrant from Uganda.
My previous skill was audio production.
I had started some community-based organisations looking to improve the wellbeing of minorities (sexually diverse, women and children) within the community.
Joining the social work degree was something that perhaps seemed unachievable for me until one day I took a Briggs and Myers test out of curiosity.
My score informed my choice (with some support in between) to take this career path.
You can be a proponent for allowing people their own power through their own self-determination.
Everyone needs a calling to drive their passion.
If this is your passion, the program will be good for you.“
Tarmara Flanagan:
“My background is in hairdressing from 14-years-old, and at 32, I entered university after completing a cert IV in community services.
Social work goes hand in hand with hairdressing, it’s sort of like informal counselling.
So many people come in while in crisis or grieving.
It’s a safe space.
I have lived experience of trauma and have always loved being with people, having deep and meaningful conversations, and hearing their stories and experiences.
I have a passion for helping people, and this put me on my path to work within the service sector.
I entered into social work due to my passion for people’s behaviour and what life event or experience makes the person behave the way they do.
I have a genuine curiosity.
The program removes a lot of barriers.
La Trobe is extremely supportive, and it’s a fulfilling career path.
Give it a go.“
The program supports graduates with intensive work placements, industry expertise, and wrap-around professional development.
Participants in the program will graduate debt-free, benefiting from a full tuition fee scholarship, a cost-of-living allowance in the first year, and an industry-standard wage in the second year.
The focus is on child and family services, with tailored training designed to build leadership and practice skills.
“Switch to Social Work” encourages partnering organisations to participate and shape the future of child and family services in Victoria.
Applications for this program are open until October 31.
