She’s 42, unmarried, and dismissed as an ‘old maid’ — or so it seems.

The Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies, a historical mystery novel by Alison Goodman, follows protagonist Lady Augusta ‘Gus’ Colebrook as she navigates a man’s world.

It’s a fiercely feminist tale that pulses with relevance despite being set in Regency England.

Meanwhile, in present-day Shepparton, the New York Times bestselling author will visit Shepparton Library for an author talk on Saturday, August 10.

Book enthusiasts can engage directly with Ms Goodman, asking questions and gaining insights into her latest literary masterpiece.

The Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies delves into the secret life of the Colebrook twins, Gus and Julia.

Underestimated by society, these women are unseen heroines, championing those in need with unwavering dedication.

The twins have edged into the uncharted territory of amateur detective work, using their wits and relative invisibility to protect fellow women.

Their next mission: to rescue their friend’s goddaughter, Caroline, from the clutches of her abusive spouse.

Will their daring plan triumph against seemingly impossible odds?

What buried truths will they uncover?

Can the Colebrook twins remain undetected yet powerful in the face of oppression?

These are some of the questions attendees can ask Ms Goodman at her upcoming event.

‘Author Talk with Alison Goodman’ will be held on Saturday, August 10, at 2pm at Shepparton Library, 41-42 Marungi St, Shepparton.

Copies of The Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies will be available for purchase at the event, and Alison will sign copies during the day.
