White Night artist: Learn to unleash creativity with Mimi Leung through SAM’s weekly sessions.

Not so long ago Goulburn Valley artist Mimi Leung’s work was projected across the 33-metre wall of Shepparton Art Museum for White Night, now she’s inside the museum teaching the youth of the region.

SAM’s education workshop series is back for the third term of the school year, with ‘How to Draw Badly’ taught by Ms Leung.

Open to all Victorian Certificate of Education students studying art, studio art or visual communications, the six-week course of 90-minute sessions is free to attend.

SAM engagement manager Gabriella Calandro said the sessions were made to build on the school curriculum.

“(The sessions) create a space where VCE students can access materials and can continue to hone their technique and skill to enhance their abilities, allowing them to grow their folio for final assessment at the end of the year,” she said.

“Mimi’s work has a vibrant, animated style, and she will be an incredible mentor for young people with aspirations in the creative fields.”

As a multi-disciplinary artist, Ms Leung engages in painting, illustration, writing and moving images, weaved together in bright and colourful depictions.

Ms Calandro said students would “benefit immensely” from the sessions, designed for participants to explore their own artistic styles and languages through guidance from Ms Leung’s expertise.

Previous participants in the workshop have gone on to have their works selected in SAM’s annual top arts exhibition, Fresh, showcasing Year 11 and 12 students’ work.

The sessions run every Wednesday from August 17 until September 21 from 4.30pm to 6pm at SAM, 530 Wyndham St, Shepparton.

Bookings can be made via SAM’s website at https://sheppartonartmuseum.com.au/event/sam-studio-term-3/
