Voices For Nicholls is asking regional leaders to run for the electorate to topple incumbent Federal Nationals member Sam Birrell at the next Federal Election.
The grassroots group, which seeks to facilitate stronger engagement with community feedback by Nicholls representatives, held a forum in Echuca on Wednesday, September 18.
While no particular candidates were identified at the meeting, Voices For Nicholls spokesperson Christine Sebire said the selection process was under way, with options across the large electorate.
“There’s some possibilities in Seymour, there’s some possibilities in Shepparton, and we would like to think there’s some possibilities in Echuca,” she said.
Following the 2022 Federal Election, which saw a 16.2 per cent swing from the Nationals towards independent candidate Rob Priestly, Ms Sebire said the right candidate could spark an “electoral showdown’’.
“Now is the time for the people of Nicholls to build on the momentum created by Rob Priestly and put forward a candidate that would spell an end to years of federal neglect,” she said.
Across the border, Voices of Farrer announced its endorsement of Independent candidate Michelle Milthorpe on Wednesday, September 18, who is also campaigning for stronger community engagement in parliament.
The seat of Farrer is currently held by Deputy Leader of the Opposition Sussan Ley who has retained the seat since 2001.
