Volunteers needed: Retired nurse Maree Welsh tutors Najella Atmanzai, who has completed five years of a seven-year medical degree in Afghanistan.

Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE is calling for volunteers to tutor English to new arrivals in the community.

The program was created to help refugee and asylum seekers settle into Australian life by providing them with vital reading, writing and language skills.

More than 50 students are involved in the program and so far, 20 volunteer tutors have signed up to help deliver the training.

GOTAFE was looking to add more tutors to the program to provide students with one-on-one or small group learning opportunities.

Volunteer tutors are required to provide one to two hours a week of English lessons to students for a minimum of six months.

The sessions could take place either face-to-face at the GOTAFE Shepparton library at the Fryers St campus or virtually via Zoom or over the phone.

Volunteers receive five hours of training over five weeks and will be matched to an individual or group of students.

The training program starts on Wednesday, July 13, from 9.30am to noon at GOTAFE, Fryers St Shepparton campus or via Zoom, from 6pm to 8pm.

If interested, phone volunteer tutor scheme co-ordinator Sue Elston via 0466 493 952 or selston@gotafe.vic.edu.au for an application form. For information, visit www.gotafe.vic.edu.au or phone 1800 GOTAFE (468 233).
