The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia was on May 17 and was marked by an event at Queen’s Gardens.

Local organisations came together, offering live music from local queer young people, keynote speakers, activities and food.

The News reporter Kady Hadjab attended and gathered attendees’ opinions on how to collectively meet each other halfway.

Allies should call out any transphobic, homophobic and sexist behaviour. We all need to take responsibility in our community so we can collectively get along and move forward.

If an ally misjudges someone, they shouldn’t go over it for five minutes. Just apologise and move on!

I feel the ally community could be more supportive by not judging us, and respecting who we like and our pronouns. Learning about the community’s history is also important. Everyone should know about emblematic figures such as Martha P. Johnson.

It is essential for allies to acknowledge that we are people with our own individuality and experiences. Being non-judgemental is key.
