There have been warnings around since the start of spring to be on the lookout for snakes, but this week seems to have been a busy one for our slithering friends.
One local took to social media notice boards on Wednesday to report a particularly aggressive (or threatened) brown snake at the footbridge entrance to the Deniliquin Island Sanctuary (behind Cressy St).
It rose up and struck out at the woman’s dog, but thankfully missed.
Her post inspired a flurry of replies, with others sharing tales of near misses.
But one reply told of a local dog that had been bitten by a brown snake earlier in the week, and thankfully saved after a trip to the vert.
Later the same day, there were reports of a large brown snake which had been run over and killed in the centre of town, between the Deniliquin TAFE Campus and the Deniliquin Swim Centre.
So keep your eyes peeled, and take all necessary precautions.
For advice on what to do if you are bitten by a snake, go to www.healthdirect.gov.au/snake-bites.
• All snake bites must be treated as potentially life-threatening. If you have been bitten by a snake, call triple zero (000) and ask for an ambulance.
