When Lynette Lane headed off to work at the local supermarket in 1970 she had no idea a packet of biscuits would shape the next 50 years of her life.

While serving customers, a young gentleman by the name of Wayne Johnson appeared and bought the packet of biscuits in question.

On that day Lyn would catch his eye.

Wayne worked at the same store and he and Lyn got to know each other during the following months.

The two were chatting away one day when Wayne nervously asked her out on a date.

“Would you care to accompany me to the umpire’s ball?” are the words he recalls saying.

At the time, Wayne was a goal umpire for the local football team in Glenroy.

That was all it took for young love to blossom, and a chain of events led to November 4, 2022, when the couple celebrated their 50th, or golden, wedding anniversary.

Two years after their first date Wayne had nervously approached Lyn’s dad, Leslie, to seek permission to ask for her hand in marriage.

“Do you love her?” Leslie asked him.

“Of course I do,” was the response.

“Then there you go, there’s your answer,” Leslie replied.

For some reason Wayne never did the romantic scene and didn’t get down on one knee to propose.

After getting the green light from Leslie, Wayne simply asked Lyn “Do you want to get married?”

On November 4, 1972 they said ‘I do’ in front of family and friends at a church in Moonee Ponds.

The couple now reside in Benalla and have been on a two-week trip up the coast to celebrate the milestone.

Congratulations from everyone at the Benalla Ensign.
