It wasn’t pretty, but they got it done.
If you look at the score sheet, 31 shots on goal to 14 is a pretty emphatic result and that’s the result Kyabram ended up with at the weekend against Shepparton.
However, Paul Newman would have preferred the scoreboard under Kyabram’s name to read 18.13 (123) instead of the 13.18 (96) it did record to Shepparton’s 11.3 (69) at Kyabram Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
“It’s always good to get the four points, but we missed the opportunities to put the game to bed early,” Newman said.
“But we’re happy with the position we’re in, considering we got a win.”
He said the Bombers were never truly comfortable throughout the clash with the Bears, not able to put proper distance on their opponents.
“We held a 3-4 goal margin through the first half, but that inefficiency in front of goal cost us and kept them in the game for a long time,” Newman said.
He cited Zac Norris as influential in the ruck, giving his midfielders first use of the footy, while Reuben Rode was “excellent” in the first half of the game.
Newman said the midfield battle was relatively even throughout the contest, but there was plenty of supply making its way down to the Bombers’ forward line.
Tom Holman played his best game for the year, finishing with three goals straight to his name by full time, the straightest kick in front of goal for the year.
Anthony DePasquale could have had seven to his name if he’d kicked straight, with the forward finishing with two goals and five behinds from the four quarters.
Kayne Pettifer also finished with two, while Cooper Vick kicked four in the 27-point victory.
Newman also made note of Mitch Dodos, who stood out in his first game for the season, back from the Bendigo Pioneers.
