Moyola Lodge aged care facility in Tatura was one of many sites hit by a severe thunderstorm on Thursday, December 22.

In the wake of the storm, at the entry to the facility, pergola acrylic sheets lay in pieces on the ground, shattered by hail.

Inside, the shared activity space and kitchenette were flooded and the ceiling sustained water damage, though none of the 43 bedrooms in the facility were affected, nor were any residents.

Chief executive Polly Devine said the experience was “quite extraordinary”.

Mess: The scene after the storm.

She said the storm and recent floods shone a light on the spirit of community, with volunteers coming to assess the destruction and clean up, all within an hour of the storm passing.

“We’re very lucky here,” she said.

“Everyone’s safe, and that’s all that matters.”

The severe thunderstorm resulted in 48 requests for assistance from Tatura SES while Shepparton Search and Rescue had another six in the area.
