Were you paying attention?

Jesse Jervis displaying his skills earlier in the year at Gunnedah.

Were you paying attention to the Ten Network’s most popular current affairs program last week - and the repeats on Friday and Sunday?

Local superstar and national whip cracking champion Jesse Jervis was a special guest on the hit show Have You Been Paying Attention?, showing off his whip cracking.

The appearance was due to his recent Australian Whip Cracking Junior Champion win.

Appearing via video link, Jesse was given the job of asking the panellists ‘This week, I was crowned the Australia Junior Champion in what?’.

Regular star Ed Kavalee gave the correct answer, which was followed by a short display of Jesse’s whip cracking skills.

Guest host Grant Denya and the panelists - Kavalee, Sam Pang, Celia Pacquola, Hayley Sproull and UK guest David Walliams - were suitably impressed.

It was then announced that Jesse would be receiving a $500 donation to go toward a charity of his choice - anti-bullying charity Dolly’s Dream.

Critical need for carers

Last week was Foster and Kinship Care Week, which CareSouth Deniliquin used as an opportunity to highlight that there is a critical need for more foster carers in the region.

CareSouth Deniliquin supports 68 children and young people in its foster care program and was recently asked by Department of Communities and Justice to find carers for another 57 children in Deniliquin and district because they cannot live safely at home.

CareSouth Deniliquin carer engagement team leader Darren Mitchell said the “reality is that we simply don’t have enough foster carers”.

“Foster Care Week is not only an opportunity to thank our wonderful carers but to encourage people to have a conversation about what it’s like to be a foster carer and breakdown any myths or barriers to becoming a carer,” he said.

Those interested in becoming a foster carer are encouraged to contact CareSouth on 1300 554 260 or visit www.caresouth.org.au.

Busy charity sale

We’re yet to receive an official report from the Navorina Auxiliary about their two-day garage sale at the weekend, but from what we saw we’re expecting great results.

We’re not sure Napier St has seen that much traffic since the Deni Ute Muster traffic plan was updated to send all muster goers down Hardinge St.

Cars lined both sides of the street for a large portion of the extra large block, and the car parks at adjacent businesses were filled too.

Quite a few locals have been spruiking about the bargains they received too.

Proceeds from the garage sale will be used to support the comfort of residents at Navorina Aged Care.

Check back on Friday for a full wrap of the weekend.

Icy cool change

The age-old saying ‘what a difference a day makes’ has certainly rung true in the past few days, particularly when it comes to the weather.

T-shirt weather was quickly replaced on Saturday with an icy blast.

In the morning people were enjoying the offerings in the Deniliquin CBD and commenting how lovely a day it was. But a few hours later, someone flipped a switch.

Wind speeds rose sharply from noon onwards, and with it came some bone chilling temperatures.

Overnight Saturday the mercury dropped to almost zero, and early yesterday the temperatures even slipped into the negatives.

Mostly sunny conditions are expected all this week. The week’s top is to be 23ºC on Wednesday, but the lows are expected to be between 1ºC and 6ºC all week.

So don’t pack those jumpers away yet.
