Shepparton’s March was a smidge warmer than average, but far wetter, with nearly 20mm more rain than the average year.

Data from the Bureau of Meteorology showed March’s average maximum temperature to be 28.3ºC, just above the long-term average of 27.5ºC.

Our hottest day was on March 22, when the mercury reached 34.1ºC.

Our lowest maximum was on March 1, when the temperature topped out at 22.4ºC, while March 16 also recorded that figure.

March 1 was also the warmest night of the month, at 18.9ºC, making the temperature difference on March 1 just 3.5ºC between maximum and minimum.

More than the average rainfall for March fell within the first five days, with 6.8mm on March 1, 13.2mm on March 2 and 23.2mm on March 5.

The total for the month came to 53.2mm — 20mm more than the average of 32.5mm.

Curiously, no rainfall was recorded at Shepparton airport during the storm on Thursday, March 23, which resulted in flash flooding across parts of town, with wind gusts peaking at 52km/h at the observation station.
