Construction of the New Dookie Rd and Wheeler St, Shepparton, intersection starts on Monday, January 16, with traffic lights to be added at the location, while roadworks at Congupna will continue for months.
The works are expected to finish in mid-March, with traffic lights turned on in early April.
As well as traffic lights, dedicated turning lanes and pedestrian crossings will also be added to the intersection.
Construction will start on the west-bound lane of New Dookie Rd and the Wheeler St intersection.
Greater Shepparton City Council said during this stage, two-way traffic will be maintained along New Dookie Rd, however, Wheeler St (north) will be closed for about six weeks and there will be no access from Wheeler St to New Dookie Rd; or from New Dookie Rd to Wheeler St during this time.
Access to the saleyards will be via Wheeler St (south) and the main entry gates of the saleyards.
The Ash St/New Dookie Rd intersection will also be closed for the duration of construction.
Meanwhile, major repairs are being carried out on the Shepparton-Katamatite Rd intersection with the Goulburn Valley Hwy at Congupna.
Department of Transport and Planning regional director of hume district Steve Bowmaker said the works were expected to be complete “before winter”.
“Right across the region, we’ve got crews on the ground completing works to repair damage caused by the recent floods and extreme rainfall.”
Works on the Shepparton alternate route, also known as Doyles Rd, started in September and will continue for a further one to two months to complete patching works related to flood recovery.
Both projects are part of the Victorian Government’s $165 million emergency road repair blitz.
