Greater Shepparton City Council, through its destination brand Shepparton & Goulburn Valley, has announced the five winners of its recent art contest.

‘A Cup of Shepp and GV’ encouraged local artists to be inspired by the Goulburn Valley’s diverse community and people.

It also aimed to showcase the hidden talents in the community, with the opportunity for residents to develop creative artwork representing some of the unique towns found within the region.

Open to all ages, the competition ran from July 10 to August 6.

Forty-six submissions from local artists, representing Shepparton, Mooroopna, Tatura, Dookie and Murchison, were received for judging.

On August 7, 15 finalists were selected to be assessed by the judges.

The judging panel was Shepparton Art Museum curator Caroline Esbenshade, artist and illustrator Mimi Leung, Destination Goulburn Valley executive officer Vicki Scott and local coffee shop owner Matt Kington.

Based on the technique and skill, concept and creativity, representation of the town and use of the format for the purpose of a coffee cup, the judges came to an agreement and five winners were announced:

City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali congratulated the winners of the contest and said it was exciting to see the talent and creativity displayed by the community.

“It was great to see so many talented people submitting their artwork for the contest,” Cr Sali said.

“We congratulate the winners and finalists for their wonderful display of creativity and talent, and also thank everyone who submitted their artwork to the competition.”

Winners will receive an art package, including a voucher for art supplies, entry to an art workshop and more.

Council and judges made plans to showcase the winning artworks for a limited time at Shepparton coffee shop Stellar.

The exhibition has since opened and will run until Saturday, September 9.

Community members will get to see the art live and also have the opportunity to vote for their the favourite piece through QR codes located at the exhibition.

Finalists have the opportunity to be named the ‘People’s Choice’, with one winner to be announced at the award ceremony in September, where the coffee cups with the artwork will be revealed and prizes presented.
