Visitors to Tocumwal will soon be able to take home more than fond memories of their time in the riverside town.
The winner of the Tocumwal Post Office’s slogan competition has been announced.
Having received over 200 submissions, Tocumwal Post Office co-owner Sharon Stevens said it was amazing how quickly the competition took off.
“It was incredibly popular and heart-warming that the community got behind it,” she said.
“We wanted something that wasn’t too long and captured the essence of Tocumwal.
“We thought, ‘Let’s put it out to the town and see what they would say.’”
Mrs Stevens said the stubbies and magnets bearing the new slogan would arrive by the end of next fortnight.
While Tocumwal’s own Tracy Booker submitted the winning slogan, its words have their own origin story.
The winning slogan, ‘On the Border Where the River Murray Flows’, is in fact the first line of the Tocumwal Public School song.
The song is played at the beginning of every Friday school assembly and was written by the wife of a former school principal, Tocumwal Public School principal Darren White said.
Ms Booker said in a Facebook comment on Tocumwal Post Office’s page that she was proud to have contributed to the beautiful place she would always call home.
Ms Booker said she began singing the school song aloud as soon as she saw the post office was looking for a new town slogan.
“It came straight to me.”
A long term resident of Tocumwal now living in Barooga, Ms Booker attended Tocumwal Public School.
In fact, her entire family on her mother’s side - including her grandmother and her ten great aunts and uncles - attended the school.
The runner-up slogan, which Mrs Stevens said would also be printed on certain souvenirs, was ‘Explore. Relax. Repeat.’.
