You have probably noticed tufts of yarn in bright colours and shapes strung across the town during seasonal events such as Anzac Day and Christmas to name a few.
Responsibility falls exclusively on the members of the yarn bombing club, who create everything from poppies for Anzac Day to snowmen around Christmas time.
The group has been active since 2020, when co-ordinator Trish Worsfold decided to organise a club for people to get their knitting needles out and keep their hands busy in the tough COVID-19 era.
The group now has about 70 regular members that meet in their open Thursday meetings in the Senior Citizen rooms and knit over tea, coffee, and good conversation.
Mrs Worsfold said this year they are switching some of their focus away from the displays.
In past years, the group has made quilts for cancer patients and knitted items for premature babies; this year they will sell their knitted goods to raise money for local charity organisations.
There’s something for everyone on sale, from beanies and blankets, to coat hanger covers in footy colours and colourful pot plant covers.
They are available for viewing purchase from the display window of Boomerang Travel, and prices vary depending on the item.
All profits from sales will be used to buy meat vouchers for people in need during the Christmas period, Mrs Worsfold said.
“We’re doing this because most people are too proud to know when to put their hand sup for help,” she said.
“The vouchers will be given to charity groups to distribute … Debi from Boomerang Travel has very kindly given us her window to display the items for sale.
“Take a moment to check it out, remembering that every little bit will help.”
Mrs Worsfold said they have already raised over $800 in the short time the knitted creations have been on display and will be available for purchase until November.
Head down to the display window at Boomerang Travel on Allan St and look at the various crochet and knitted items up for sale, and you could see yourself walking away with a warm beanie or two.
Or, if you too have nifty hands or an interest in crochet or knitting, join the yarn bombers in their meetings in the Senior Citizens room where $2 donation will get you a cup of coffee, yarn and friendship.
They meet twice a month for their open meetings. Meeting dates: July 23; August 6 and 20; September 3 and 17; October 1 and 15; and November 12 and 26.
