Yarnbombers return to rug up Benalla

Five years since the Benalla Yarnbombers formed with the intent of brightening up the darkest month they are back and bigger than ever.

With colourful decorations and cute characters Benalla’s CBD is even brighter than last year.

Once again the footprint will be Bridge St West with a few decorations spilling into side streets.

Red B4 Bookshop also has a hand-knitted tea party scene inside.

Yarnbomber Joy Shirley said most were installed on Saturday afternoon (July 30).

“The focus is on rugging up Benalla,” Ms Shirley said.

“It’s about brightening up the town at the end of winter. The trees haven’t got any leaves, things are a bit drab and we try and bring some brightness to the town.”

Sadly last year a couple of Minion characters were stolen, so this year the volunteers have made seven new ones.

“We will have a lot of new bollard covers this year with a bit of a theme of whimsy,” Ms Shirley said.

“We’ve got witches, a dragon, a prince and princess and a skeleton.

“We also have all the Minions, and some have a landscape theme.

“We have some animals in the pet shop on Bridge St, some cats and birds. Even an elephant,” Ms Shirley said.

As always most of the yarn has been donated to the group, and it also reuses yarn from previous years, as well as updating and repairing damaged items.

Benalla’s yarn bombing will be in place, brightening up the town for about five weeks.
