While many other youngsters her age are probably enjoying the little bit of freedom offered by school being out while the Echuca floods are happening, Lexi Wright is playing her part in flood relief.
The 10-year-old has rolled up her sleeves and donned an apron and has been cooking up a storm this week to feed CFA firefighters manning a pump at the end of her court.
The Echuca 208 Primary School Year 4 student has been baking goodies, including scones, a sponge, brownies and pasties, to keep up the morale of the volunteers and taking them down to them each afternoon.
The idea to help in this way was her own.
“You can see them out there trying to do something good and they’re trying to save houses,” Lexi said.
“They’re helping our community and trying to save the town.”
Lexi started handing out baked goods on Monday, October 24, and said she would probably continue doing it “until they leave”, or when she goes back to school.
The idea came about because part of Lexi’s school work she could do while she was not at school was to cook some things and take photos of them.
She just thought she could donate what she makes to the firefighters.
The community-minded youngster also spent time helping sandbag, including helping out an elderly couple on the ‘wrong’ side of the levee in Echuca east to protect their home.
Lexi’s mum Belinda Wright is pleased her daughter has taken the initiative to help out by cooking.
“I’m very proud of her,” she said.
“She walks down with her tray every day.
“She’s always wants to help.”
