A group of young people will have the chance to draft a bill to be presented to the state government, with a genuine chance it might get passed.

The state government is excited to invite young Victorians to actively engage in the YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament in 2024.

The state government has committed to investing over $160,000 into this program, which offers a unique opportunity for individuals aged 16 to 25 to gain hands-on experience with the parliamentary process.

Participants will collaborate on drafting, debating, and voting on bills during an intensive three-day session, set to take place within the historic chambers of the Victorian Parliament in July next year.

Bills that successfully pass through the Youth Parliament are presented to the state government for serious consideration.

The impact of the Youth Parliament is profound, having played a pivotal role in shaping more than 30 Victorian laws in the past.

Minister for Youth Natalie Suleyman officially launched the application process for this program and encouraged young individuals from all corners of the state to participate.

“We are proud to support this meaningful program that empowers young voices to address issues that truly matter to them,” she said.

“I wholeheartedly encourage young people from across our state to seize this opportunity.

“This is a unique chance for our future leaders to gain insight into the workings of government and influence change on the very issues they are passionate about.”

Previous initiatives produced from this program include a new recycling scheme, mandatory bicycle helmet usage, the prohibition of soft drink sales in government schools, and the introduction of gender-neutral school uniforms.

In addition to the parliamentary program, the YMCA Victoria Youth Press Gallery offers aspiring journalists a unique opportunity to hone their political journalism, photography, videography, and social media skills.

Past participants have contributed and published content on Youth Parliament for various media outlets.

Applications are open until November 12.
