Northern District Community Health and North Central LLEN have again collaborated on a homelessness awareness project.
This initiative brings together young people from across Gannawarra Shire as well as Swan Hill, Loddon and Buloke shires to raise awareness during Homelessness Awareness Week, from August 5 to 11.
Building on last year's success, this year's project features even more art installations.
The initiative involves painting and displaying seven cubby houses across the region.
Young people from Cohuna, along with others from Kerang and Boort have been involved in creating four cubby houses.
Melbourne artist Lukas Kasper worked with students from East Loddon School to design and create two cubby houses, while Tobie Cameron from Mystic Park collaborated with students from Wedderburn College to create another.
These cubbies will be displayed in prominent areas across the four shires, including cafes, services and other public spaces.
At the end of the display, a few cubby houses will be auctioned off, with the proceeds supporting local homelessness services. The remaining cubbies will be donated to local childcare centres and libraries.
NDCH youth programs co-ordinator Matt Allan emphasised the importance of this initiative.
‘’So many young people are affected by homelessness across the country, but youth know little about how it happens and what we can do to help,’’ he said.
‘’There are amazing services in our local community that help out, but unless you need their services, you’re likely to not know they exist.
‘’This project teaches new skills, showcases young artists’ work, and delivers a strong message about homelessness.’’
