A love letter and a new challenge

Michelle Yeoh in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

I’ve never really been a movie person.

I only recently found out who Quentin Tarantino was, and I have never seen a lot of “iconic” films.

But I do love horror. I mean, I hate it, but I love it.

I spend the whole time complaining about how scared I am, but I can’t help but love it.

I especially love A24 horror films. Talk to Me, X and Pearl, just to name a few.

A still from Talk to Me.

It’s really the first time I’ve been more likely to watch a film because of the studio behind it.

Have you ever heard anyone say ‘Oh dude, this film should be great — 20th Century Studios made it’ or ‘Did you hear Universal Pictures is making a new film? I can’t wait.’?

Until now, film studio logos had simply been something I sat through at the beginning of a film, as forgettable as the end credits (no offence to anyone in an end credits).

It was not something to which I paid attention; I might have ended up taking it in, but it was not an active part of my enjoyment.

I don’t hear the MGM lion roar and get excited.

But recently, I was watching a random horror film from eight years ago and was genuinely excited when I saw the A24 logo.

I don’t know how to describe my love for A24. I have so much to say but it’s too much to express.

Every style its filmmakers attempt, they nail: the camera angles, the staging, the casting, the plot and the vibes. Perfection.

So far, A24 has created 164 films since its first one in 2013 and there is an additional seven planned for release this year.

I plan to watch them all. Every. Single. One.

I’ve already watched six and I loved every one, so why not continue?

There’s some already on my watch list, such as MaXXXine and Everything, Everywhere All At Once, but there are some I would never have come across, so why not?

Why not take it as an opportunity to support an independent studio that has made films I deeply enjoyed?

This venture is a little daunting, but I think I’ll end up enjoying it. I’ve got a spreadsheet and everything.

I may update you as I go along. Or this may be the last you ever hear from me about the company.

The A24 logo brings with it the promise of another brilliant piece of cinema.

I hope, however, that when you next see the A24 logo, you think of this and buckle up for a brilliant piece of cinema.

Because I know I will.

P.S. For anyone curious, the films I have seen are Tusk, Midsommar, X, Pearl, Bodies Bodies Bodies and Talk To Me.
