The recent price hikes at the Shepparton Public Cemetery will have a severe impact on families in our community, particularly those already facing financial hardship.

Burying a child in the cemetery now costs $3391, up from $565, a 500 per cent increase. Muslim burials have increased from $1450 to $3779, a 160 per cent rise. These exorbitant fees are unfair and place undue stress on grieving families.

Losing a loved one is an incredibly difficult time for any family. The added financial burden of these fees only adds to their grief and stress. Many families are already struggling with the rising cost of living, and these increased burial costs are unacceptable.

The Victorian Department of Health, led by Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas, must take responsibility for this issue. It is unacceptable that these changes were implemented without consultation or considering the impact on local families.

I have called on the government to review its decision of the exorbitant increase of cemetery fees.

This is yet another example of the Labor government punishing Victorians for its financial mismanagement.
