On-the-spot fine
Lance Carrington, Echuca
Read your interesting article on Victorian police being able to issue fines on-the-spot electronically, what a great idea.
But does it go far enough?
I would suggest that each officer also carry a point-of-sale scanner and a “float” of cash so that we are able to maintain our reputation as the most fined state in Australia.
How easy would it be? Now sir, will you be paying by Visa? Mastercard? We are currently offering 10 per cent off for speeding fines on three to five kilometres over for the month of June.
Marvellous idea really... ‘it’s all about road safety.’ Yeah right.
Scrap the tax letters
Danny O’Brien
Leader of The Nationals
The emergency services tax is the Allan Labor Government’s latest cash grab and The Nationals will continue to fight it.
What better way of joining us in the fight than sending a message directly to the treasurer, Jaclyn Symes?
You can do just that at the website https://scrapthetax.com.au
The website is the cornerstone of our “Scrap The Tax” campaign aimed at killing off the desperately unfair emergency services tax before its planned introduction on July 1.
The tax hits households and businesses, with farmers copping a 189 per cent rise on the amount paid under the former fire services levy.
There is no guarantee the extra money will go to the front-line emergency workers who deserve it. It will be used to prop up back room city staff.
A vote on the emergency services tax has been deferred and we must strike now before another vote next month.
Let’s send a message to the treasurer now and scrap the tax.
Federal election 2025

In the seat of Farrer, we have a new independent, Michelle Milthorpe, who has put her hand up for consideration.
Articles that I have read have been very encouraging about the dedication that she would have in trying to improve the lot for us country people and farming communities.
I have been quite impressed and imagine that she may develop into such a politician as Helen Dalton.
What Helen has achieved has been amazing and we sincerely thank her for her untiring representation.
I have a couple of questions to ask Michelle through your pages. One of course is what her stance is on water buybacks.
Another is: Does she understand the waste of water in the South Australian lower lakes being kept artificially fresh with 1.5 million megalitres, when for the last 7000 years they have been estuarine?
What is her stance on renewables taking up valuable agricultural land and on the unwanted massive transmission lines that march through peoples farms and farmers having no recourse.
Will she fight with Helen Dalton on the water issues and on the unwanted renewables that will only have a life of 20-25 years before they need replacing?
Will she be able to vote as an independent?
Our current sitting member Sussan Ley has not always been on our side either, particularly in the water crisis of a few years ago when she would not come to Deniliquin to address gatherings of disgruntled irrigation farmers, but met with four or five farmers to try and cool the temperature a little.
Farmers have long memories.
Current minister Tanya Plibersek is the same, she will not come to talk to us. I feel she is too frightened of the reception she will get for taking more water away from us.
So, what are our options. My personal opinion favours what has been offered by LNP, especially the reduction in fuel price to take effect straight after the election if they are fortunate enough to be elected and the rest of the progressive policies that have been offered.
I believe we are obliged to think seriously of the trillion-dollar debt and growing, and what is the future for us and our families if our nation becomes bankrupt. The answer for me is simple.
