Moving hearts as well as boxes

No tears here: Bonnie and Eden were full of excitement when moving house.

I realised I put the cart before the horse last week when talking about my Couch Physics dramas.

I neglected to tell you the story of our big move first before losing my way in the details of my marketplace adventures.

It’s no secret that I’m an emotional person, especially when it comes to my children (or Essendon’s AFLW debut, of course).

But packing up all of our worldly belongings and hot-footing it to the other end of town for more space and a better-suited location didn’t tug at my heartstrings as much as I thought it would.

I moved around plenty of times throughout my childhood and it never did me any harm — quite the opposite, in that it helped furnish the coveted journalistic ability of being able to hold a conversation with anyone and everyone.

Clearly, it also hardened my moving-house emotions as well.

The sight of Eden, 4, and Bonnie, 1, packing away their toys and possessions barely registered on my tear-jerking scale.

I’ve narrowed it down to two potential reasons.

Firstly, the amount of excitement the girls displayed was undoubtedly contagious. Eden was looking forward to having two bathrooms in the house the most.

Secondly, the memories of the first few years of our children’s lives were all coming with us anyway. Yes, the walls around us are now different — but that doesn’t stop us reminiscing about the pitter-patter of those tiny footsteps that aren’t quite so tiny anymore.
