Oddie | People choose a winner

The Macquarie Dictionary Word of the Year for 2022 has been announced — but Oddie is much more interested in the People’s Choice Word of the Year.

Bachelor’s handbag has been dubbed the ‘word’ of the year — given that it is in fact two, we’re not sure how it made the shortlist, but we’re not complaining.

The committee charged with selecting the word of the year (which was teal by the way) had this to say about the quintessential Aussie phrase.

“Bachelor’s handbag is a funny, clever coinage — so quintessentially Australian, summing up the role of a BBQ chook perfectly,” they said.

As the summer months are now upon us, there is even more reason to head to your local supermarket to scope out a bachelor’s handbag, a tub of pasta salad and swing by the KFC drive-thru on your way home for a large chips to celebrate the win.

It is simply your patriotic duty as an Australian citizen.

Bleary-eyed office

Oddie is looking around the News office on this Thursday morning and seeing plenty of tired faces.

Oddie’s Twitter feed at 2am resembled the work group chat as all and sundry rose to the challenge of supporting the Socceroos in the middle of the night.

And of course, the collective effort was worth it — with Australia defeating Denmark 1-0 and progressing to the Round of 16 to face Argentina, a match which will take place at 6am Shepparton time on Sunday.

Hopefully we get to see Garang Kuol showcase his skills for a second time in the tournament.
