When it all goes beer-shaped

Seconds from disaster: The view through Max Stainkamph's camera lens moments before he was drenched in beer in the Echuca Murray Bombers huddle on Sunday. Photo by Max Stainkamph

What a day it was at Deakin Reserve on Sunday, as Oddie made his way to the first Goulburn Valley League grand final since 2019.

It was as good a day as you could ask from a football perspective, crowds packed in and cheering.

The football and netball were all good, high-intensity games and the sun was shining, so unlike last weekend in the Murray Football Netball League and Kyabram District League deciders, no-one got wet.

Well, except two people.

Intrepid OneFM journalist Brendan Reilly and the News’ own Max Stainkamph bravely made their way inside the circle in the Echuca rooms as the Murray Bombers sung the song.

They were, shockingly, drenched in beer seconds in.

Mr Stainkamph’s chances of getting a top shot in the huddle evaporated after about four photos, as an entire can’s worth of Great Northern was sent flying his way.

The photo tells the story far better than Oddie ever could, as could the video the reporter tweeted and put on the Riverine Herald Facebook page.

For those who haven’t seen it, in the other hand to the camera was Max’s phone, which captured the moment the huddle broke and became a mosh pit, and then the moment the phone was knocked out of his hand and sent spinning to the floor.

Oddie thought it captured the chaos brilliantly.

Spot the superstars

It was a bit of a who’s who of the Goulburn Valley League at Deakin Reserve on the weekend, with old faces coming out of the woodwork.

Adelaide star in the making and Shepparton Swans product Josh Rachele was in the thick of it as part of the red and white cheer squad, while Hawthorn’s Jarman Impey was back in his home town and also on the ground during the breaks.

Potential number one draft pick for 2023, Tongala’s Harley Reid, was in attendance as well, according to Oddie’s sources.

Seymour products Sam Durham (Essendon) and Sophie Locke (Hawthorn) were spotted at the netball cheering the Lions on, while former Melbourne defender Marty Hore and Carlton utility Brodie Kemp were cheering on family members in green and white.

There were whispers of a sighting of Katandra’s Lachie Ash, but his Instagram allegedly had the GWS midfielder at a golf course in Queenstown some six hours before.
