The Shepparton Kings Family Tuckerbag store was located in Wyndham St next to the Victoria Hotel, where the modern-day Rebel Sport is.

In the 1950s, this site had a Dickins supermarket and then a Coles New World store.

Tuckerbag was an Australian supermarket chain that commenced in 1970 and became well-known during the 1980s and 1990s. It was particularly recognisable for its unique mascot, a paper shopping bag puppet called Tucker who featured in its TV ads. The popular catchphrase was, “Where do ya get it?”

The chain was prominent in Victoria and had a significant presence in various communities, including Shepparton.

In 1999, Tuckerbag was acquired by the larger FoodWorks chain, which led to the rebranding of Tuckerbag stores under the FoodWorks name. This acquisition allowed the FoodWorks group to expand its footprint and integrate Tuckerbag’s operations into its own.

The distinctive Tuckerbag branding and its puppet mascot, however, did not survive the merger and are now part of Australia’s retail history.

Lost Shepparton comments:

Patricia Doherty

It used to be Dickins supermarket back whenever. Mum shopped there in the 60s or 70s.

Shirree Bell

Loved this place. My Nana shopped here every week and got it home delivered in paper bags.

Marg Farley

Loved this supermarket from the time it opened — all goods we put into cardboard boxes ourselves at the till. The staff (were) always helpful.

Melinda Piggott

We lived in Welsford St and would do the shopping and wheel the trolley home, unpack it, and wheel it back. So convenient.

Andrew Russ

Mum shopped there when it was Coles New World, but when Coles closed, she moved to the super Kmart complex.

Tanya Thomas

Where the brown paper bags were free! Oh, they also packed, and brought out, and placed in the car for you.

Allan Bush

I remember going to Dickins when I was young with Mum and her cane shopping basket on her arm. We must have bought less food in those days.

Joanne Down

I worked at this store starting as a junior when it opened and was still there when it closed. I got transferred to Mooroopna then.
