Thousands of homes were left without power in Shepparton overnight, after an alleged drink driver crashed into a power pole.

Shepparton police Sergeant Gerard Warren said there was extensive damage to the vehicle and the driver allegedly blew 0.137 when he was breath tested.

Police were called to the single vehicle collision at the corner of Newton and Runge streets, Shepparton, at 12.05am on Thursday, September 8.

A Powercor spokesperson said the incident caused a power outage that affected about 2500 customers.

“Crews were able to restore power to more than 2100 customers by 1.30am, and progressively restored power to the remaining customers throughout the early morning,” the spokesperson said.

“All customers were back on before 5am, and crews are continuing to repair the damaged infrastructure.”

A 23-year-old man will be charged on summons with careless driving and drink driving to appear in court at a later date.
