A group of arsonists got more than they bargained for when they torched a car in a Shepparton street last week.

On Tuesday, February 13, about 12.15am, a group of people set fire to a Holden Statesman at a property on Westmorland Cres, Shepparton.

In the process, they set fire to the passenger door of their car, a dark-coloured Holden sedan, before fleeing the scene.

They were last seen heading west on Westmorland Cres towards Archer St. CCTV footage showed them driving past a home with their car on fire.

Shepparton police and firefighters were on the scene by 12.25am.

Detective Senior Constable Jessica Stievano said police knew at least two people were involved, as a driver and a passenger were in the car.

“We attended at the time, and the fire victim also assisted in putting out the fire of his own vehicle,” she said.

“The victim saw the car on fire but didn’t see the incident happen.”
