A woman who stole a garden power tool from a ute and an ornament from a Shepparton business has been sentenced to three days in jail, but is already free having served her time in pre-sentence detention.

Shanika Morehu, 24, of Shepparton, pleaded guilty in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court to two counts of theft, two counts of committing an indictable offence while on bail and failing to answer bail.

Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Brent O’Grady told the court Morehu stole a line trimmer from a ute parked on McCracken St, Shepparton, on March 16.

She was on bail at the time of the theft.

The court heard that in a separate incident Morehu went to Silly Solly’s shop in Wyndham St, Shepparton, where she sprayed a deodorant and then put it in her pocket on March 7.

She also stole an owl figurine.

When police found her in nearby toilets, they found the figurine in her pocket and a woman with her had a deodorant in her handbag but police were unable to confirm if it was the same can from inside the store, Leading Sen Constable O’Grady said.

The court heard Morehu told police at the time that she “totally forgot” she had put the owl in her pocket.

She was also on bail at the time.

Morehu’s solicitor Shana McDonald told the court her client had spent three nights in custody and asked her to be sentenced to time already served in custody, to which magistrate Ian Watkins agreed.

“If it’s not yours, don’t touch it,” Mr Watkins warned Morehu as he released her.
