The otherwise good behaviour Shepparton police are praising the community for during the grand final long weekend has been marred by an assault on a staff member at a licensed Shepparton venue.

Police were called to Shepparton RSL at around 7.15pm on Saturday, September 28 after reports a patron had assaulted a worker.

The man, who was unable to finish his shift, was transported to Goulburn Valley Health to be treated for his injuries.

Police notified WorkSafe of the incident.

Shepparton police have labelled the behaviour “disheartening”, saying the staff member was working a busy shift on AFL grand final day, and managing a high volume of patronage at the time of the assault, before ending it having to be treated in hospital.

“I think the community of Greater Shepparton would be disappointed to hear of this incident, particularly given that the staff member was just going about his business at the venue and that the assault was unprovoked,” police said.

The victim is being supported by police and his colleagues from Shepparton RSL.

Police are calling for witnesses to the incident while their investigations continue.
