A man is believed to be in a serious but stable condition after a tree fell on his vehicle on the Hume Fwy in Longwood East, with Melbourne-bound lanes closed on Monday afternoon.

“It’s believed a car was travelling citybound on Hume Fwy when a tree fell onto the vehicle around 3.30pm,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

“Police, CFA and SES crews worked to free the driver from the vehicle.

“The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle at the time, has been airlifted to hospital with what are believed to be serious injuries.”

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said paramedics were treating a man for upper and lower body injuries.

The lane closures are between Euroa and Longwood, with the incident near Avenel-Longwood Rd.

Motorists are being asked to consider detouring through Violet Town via Murchison-Violet Town Rd and the Goulburn Valley Fwy.

The lanes will be reopened when Victoria Police investigations are complete and it is safe to do so.
