A man who had a knife on him “for protection” has faced court.

Police found drugs down the back of a man’s pants when he was arrested, a court has heard.

Daniel McCabe, 37, of Congupna, pleaded guilty in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court to possessing methamphetamines, possessing cannabis, possessing a controlled weapon and failing to appear in court.

Prosecutor Senior Constable Ethan Hamill said police found a bag of methamphetamines down the back of McCabe’s pants and a small bag of cannabis in his satchel when they picked him up for questioning on another matter in Shepparton on March 27, 2023.

He told police he also had a knife on him, which he felt he needed “for protection”, Sen Constable Hamill said.

McCabe’s solicitor, Ian Michaelson, said his client had been impacted by homelessness, but now had stable accommodation.

McCabe was fined $300.
