A man who was caught riding a motorbike and a ‘monkey bike’ around Shepparton streets without a licence has been fined $1500.
Glenn Justin Bell, 50, pleaded guilty in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court to two counts of unlicensed driving, two counts of using an unregistered vehicle, two counts of failing to wear a motorbike helmet, and using a vehicle that is not in a safe and roadworthy condition.
Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Fiona Kennedy told the court Bell was seen riding an unregistered motorbike in Railway Parade, Shepparton, on May 14, 2020.
He did not have a helmet on at the time, but his passenger did.
Bell did not have a licence to ride the motorbike.
The court heard that a little over a month after, on June 27, 2020, police stopped Bell who was riding a ‘monkey bike’ – which his solicitor described as being similar to a little go kart – in Hayes St, Shepparton.
He was again unlicensed and the bike was not registered.
Bell’s solicitor Luke Slater said the case was “slightly different” to ordinary driving charges, given the type of vehicle he was in.
Mr Slater also said while the father-of-two had a lengthy and relevant history, he said he thought he was now in a “better place” than previous times he had met him.
“At 50, I think he is slowing down and growing up,” Mr Slater said.
Bell was fined $1500 and ordered to pay $129.30 in court costs.
No order was made against his driver’s licence.
