A Shepparton man has been caught driving almost five times over the legal blood alcohol limit.

The 36-year-old had his car impounded after he was allegedly caught drink driving at Stanhope on Friday, February 28.

Officers patrolling the Midland Hwy at about 5.20pm detected a Honda sedan travelling at 150km/h in a 100km/h zone.

Police pulled the vehicle over and performed a preliminary breath test on the driver.

Police then took the man to a police station for an evidentiary test, where he allegedly returned a reading of 0.248.
