AFL Goulburn Murray is looking to help expand female participation in Aussie rules football with a new program aimed at getting more women into coaching.
AFLGM is set to hold its first She Can Coach workshop later this month, specifically for female participants, aimed at helping introduce more women into the coaching role
“It is a new initiative to really start to empower females to get into coaching,” AFGM regional manager Shaun Connell said.
“It will focus on the fundamentals of coaching, there will be some practical and theoretical aspects to it. It is a workshop that will, hopefully, empower females to get into coaching.”
Connell said the AFL had held sessions like this before, but this would be the first time one has been held in the Goulburn Murray region.
“We have run female coaching courses across the state, but this is the first time we have had a real focus in the Goulburn Murray region,” he said.
“Female footy is growing across the country. We believe that the Goulburn Murray is an area where there is huge growth.
“We have over 450 female participants across our region – everywhere from Deniliquin all the way down to Wandong, Yea and Alexandra.
“We know that more girls will play football if they are in a female-only environment coached by females, so that is where we are trying to build that capacity.”
The workshop will be held from 6.30pm-8.30pm on Monday, May 22 at the AFL Goulburn Murray office at Kialla Reserve.
It is free to register for the workshop, with 50 spots available.
“We would encourage any mums, aunties, grandmas who love the game that want to provide the opportunity for girls to play the game to register for this course,” Connell said.
