Anna Castles was elected unopposed as the next president of the Yarrawonga Bridge Club at its AGM last week.
She thanked Pamela Charles, the previous president, for her work in the position she held for the past ten years.
The rest of the club would like to join her in thanking Pamela for her skillful and caring management over that long period of time.
Tom Hackett remains the secretary, and Gloria Roome continues her post as treasurer. Jan Hackett will stay as the masterpoint secretary, and the club welcomes Joyce Oberman to the committee.
The meeting was followed by the first round of the Club Championships.
Tom and Jan Hackett took an early lead with 70.1%. They were followed by Peter and Carol Henderson who, on 61.8%, haven’t forgotten much about the game during their travels. Welcome back!
David Ware and Les Williams rounded out the placings with 52.7%.
The dealing machine had fun with the hands for Thursday night’s session. There were three small slams, three GRAND slams and at least five hands containing a singleton K. Well done to David and Les who bid the 7 no trump hand, one of the highest scoring hands in bridge.
David opened the bidding, and Les took the bit between his teeth and pushed on to the grand slam.
Gloria Roome and Edith Mason also made a small slam in no trump on a different hand – this time against Les and David.
They were the only two pairs to get to a slam, so the bidding wasn’t easy although twelve tricks rolled in fairly easily on the hands.
Winners on the night were the Hacketts on 64.6% followed by Les and David on 62.5% and Edith and Gloria on 56.3.
The group will get together for a meal at the golf club on Thursday this week.
Let Peter know if you can attend.
