Tungamah Bowls Club

Monday, November 4 Tungamah held their Annual Horse Auction, voted to be one of the best yet as the old Clubhouse was full.

Dylan Sidebottom as auctioneer and Allan Ralph as penciller did a great job getting the crowd going while John Hemphill as Catering Manager with wife Chris had the food under control.

Thanks to all those who contributed prior with preparation and on the night, both in house and out to make the night a huge success.

All funds raised, apart from the horses, went straight into the Building Fund.

So, thank you to all those who attended, the club does appreciate your support.

It was great to see local member Tim McCurdy and wife Glynis attend out of the blue, a relaxing night for them without any political pressures. Thursday nights social get together continues to grow; it is so great to see so many locals embracing the Tungamah Bowls Club as a community hub.

Members were present to witness the walking of Brady and Taylar Hayes youngest son, a first for Tungamah Bowls Club. Club events have started with Pairs and 100 UP on the go.

Monster Building Fund Raffle also up and running with tickets available from members, Tunga Hotel, Store and Post Office.

Midweek Pennant October 29:

Team travelled to Corowa Civic and at last achieved some success, winning two rinks to come home with 14 points.

Green was excellent very much like Tungamah. Tunga Bowls sit in 5th spot and next play Yarrawonga who are 2nd.

November 6 - travelled again to Yarrawonga and had a surprising victory winning all three rinks and Cricket got the pony off his back.

It was a friendly game, and Tunga was very appreciative of Yarrawonga’s hospitality. Journo took home their lucky number draw so went away happy. Club Mulwala is the next opponent.

Saturday B1’s - November 2 It was thought that Tunga may have had to forfeit this match with ten players with other priorities, some gave up their plans to stay and represent their club, thank you. Selectors did a great job to put two teams together.

Welcome goes to new member Tom Costigan who joined the ranks to help out, he played with Pop, Barry Costigan, Cousin Jack and Cricket Haebich.

They went down by only 8 shots against ladder leaders Moyhu on their own green. Moyhu had a convincing victory defeating Tunga 93 to 43 shots, Tunga now 7th on ladder. Always a great trip regardless of the result as afternoon tea is always plentiful, which in that instance helped reduce the pain.

Players do appreciate the hospitality shown and the effort some clubs take to cater for travellers.

B1’s - November 9: Tungamah had a resounding win, defeating Moira at home 86 to 35, winning three rinks and moves them to 5th spot, just out of the four.

Rinks were adjusted to allow for after play activities and paid off. Congratulations to each player on their efforts. Travel to Rutherglen on Saturday.

Saturday A3’s November 2:

Lucky to have two teams playing with the ten missing, we were host to Swanpool who handled Tungamah’s quick greens better than the home team.

With a 82 to 70 shot win, Graeme Whinray, Anthony Clota, Bill Wallden and Phil Pettit the only winning Rink 26 to 8, getting Tunga 2 points.

Swanpool move to 3rd and Tunga down to 7th, a lot of work to be done if we hope to make the four.

May be different when and if selectors have players available to make appropriate choices.

No wonder we hear of so many complaints about barking dogs, truthfully, they did not stop all the time we were bowling. Whoever has dogs North of the bowling green needs to start listening to their dogs and there was more than one.

A3’s - November 9 Away to Mansfield, and this story not so positive, Tunga lost 92 to 58 with only one rink winning.

Many team changes and we stay in 7th spot. Congratulations were made by Manager Rob Browning to Jeff Armstrong and Richard Smith on their inclusion in the A3s for the first time, they both acquitted themselves well despite the final results.

At home to Benalla on Saturday.

The A2’s are now 3rd on the ladder in a tight tussle for first, due to percentage.

A3’s Club Mulwala lost to Wodonga. All players enjoyed the game and it was an unfortunate loss. We really enjoyed the humour and great attitude from the players from Wodonga.

Club Mulwala shots 48, points 2. To Wodonga shots 61, points 12. The next game is against Benalla away. Now sitting 6th on the ladder.

B2’s had a loss at the Commercial Club in Albury. A very different green, being artificial and on top of the roof of the SS&A Club.

It took a while for the team to get our heads around it all. Club Mulwala shots 35, points 0. Commercial club shots 75, points 14.

Currently sitting 5th on the ladder. Looking forward to playing Tungamah next game.

Geoff Mitchell the clubs coach is running the Saturday morning matches at Club Mulwala.

The competition is also ideal for bowlers who do not want to travel to play, or do not like playing bowls on a hot Saturday afternoon. Winning players take home Club Mulwala vouchers and cash.

The matches are great opportunity for the clubs’ players to increase their skills and hopefully impress the selection committee.

Sponsors Night - Well what a fabulous night this turned out to be with 14 sponsor teams, totalling 78 bowlers and supporters altogether.

The weather Gods were kind providing us with a beautiful warm, balmy evening and along with the “catchy” music and some entertaining bowling, it couldn’t be anything else but successful and enjoyable.

The night began with a sausage sizzle and then proceeded to some serious bowling, with each team competing to be the very first name on the auspicious, inaugural shield which was won by the triumphant Cumberoona team with Drake Design coming in at second place.

Winners of the Nutbush Competition was Terry White Chemist with every team member participating and showing their skills at dancing along to the music of the Nutbush song; closely followed by Belmore Wealth in second place.

President Robert Tait welcomed everyone, and gave a run-down on the history of the club and explained what is involved to ensure we are a viable, successful organisation, and expressed the club’s gratitude and appreciation of all the sponsors, acknowledging that without their support the club would encounter more difficulties.

Many thanks to Kim Silver for her time and efforts in organising the night, and also to the many helpers in the club who all “chipped in” to help in so many ways.

Midweek Pennant - Al - played at Wangaratta where we had a good win 69 shots to 62, 11 points to 3.

All games were close with the best winning team being Ian Woods, Peter Velardo, Sue Middleton and Evelyn Calder.

B1 - played at Moyhu where we had an excellent win 64 shots to 41, 14 points to 0 with every team playing well and having a good win.

Michael Szarbo, Ray Butler, Mick Crawford and Kevin Evans were the best winning team winning 22 shots to 13.

B2 - were at home to Tungamah and although all games were close, we couldn’t quite manage the win, going down at the end of play by 15 shots, 50 shots to 65.

Ray Sheridan, Geoff Hargreaves, Eugene O’Connor and Peter Taylor lost by only 4 shots as also did the team of Keith McQualter, Rosene Andrews, Kay Tait and June Binental.

Weekend Pennant - A1 played away to Rutherglen and were defeated by the home team 85 shots to 76, 16 points to 2 with the only winning team on the day being Jason McCloy, Stephen Day, Gary Murnane and Ros King who won 27 shots to 14.

A4 - played at home to local team Club Mulwala and saw some very close games with two sides losing by only 1 and 2 shots, but eventually saw Club Mulwala being the Victors winning 82 shots to 81.

The team of Peter Markby, Mick Crawford, Joe Borg and Michael Dixon played well to win 22 shots to 13.

B1 - played at home to St James; St James being too strong overall winning 67 shots to 44. Noelene Borg, Lisa Burnham, Jules Allen and Keith McQualter were narrowly defeated by 3 shots 16 to 19

B2 also played at home against Club Mulwala who played well to win 74 shots to 52. Geoff Hargreaves, Gary Lovell, Neil Hamilton and Bill Gorman secured a very close win of 2 winning 21 shots to 19.
