Major Building Fund Raffle -

Their clubhouse are old shearers quarters moved there in 1957. This aged building has served both bowlers and the local community well over this extensive period.

A builders report has indicated that time is up for these old bones and she needs to be replaced, not a maybe but a must.

Fund raising, grant applications, raffles, horse sales and bowls competitions, all monies raised are committed to this end.

A Major Raffle has just been launched, eight prizes to be won, tickets are $20 each.

1st Prize - $5000 Cash.

2nd Prize - 3 nights’ accommodation plus $100 meal voucher at Mulwala Water Ski Club.

3rd Prize - 60 litre Car Fridge/Freeze with cover.

Pennant

Another solid week for the Waterbaggers and some great representations at regional level also.

Midweek A1s played Wodonga at home and had a good win over an always challenging team; winning 66/59.

G Sanders, L Spencer, W Lowrie and C Sanders rink doing the damage with a convincing 24/12 win. Ladder Pos - 4th B1s defeated Benalla at home with a closely contested 59/50 win. K Allender, P Dodman, S Smith and B Norwood getting Yarra over the line with a convincing 22/14 scorecard. Ladder Pos - 1st.

B2s travelled to Corowa Civic 2 going down 47/56. 1 drawn rink and a loss by 1 on another against a strong opponent is not too shabby. Ladder Pos - 3rd.

Weekend

A1s hosted Wodonga securing a good win 80/66 in a compelling contest with 2 rinks drawing and 1 rink just going down. The M Szabo led rink comprising of S Maddox, S Middleton and C Sanders proving a formidable force winning 30/13 – great job team.

Kudos also to Dave Charrington for stepping in at the last minute as Les Spencer retired sick and playing a rock-solid game …totally excelling.

Dave is a brand-new pennant player and until recently just played a season of barefoot bowls. Well done champ. Forever known now as “Omar” as dubbed by the opposition skip in reference to the great Omar Sherriff - Ladder Pos - 5th.

A4s travelled to Benalla having a resounding win 102/56 with all rinks getting up. P Markby, J Borg, K Evans and M Dixon nailing a 28/11 win with K Allender and R Butlers rinks also securing strong wins. Ladder Pos - 4th B1s had a loss at Wangaratta going down 63/51. T Dodds rink had a win by 1 shot. Let’s bounce back next week. Ladder Pos - 7th. B2s were also away at St James a notoriously hard green to procure a win on. But the team did so in fine fashion with a very strong performance of 73/47. N Owen, G Hargreave, N Hamilton and J Binental had a ripper of a day claiming a 31/7 win; way to go you lot!

Winning rink of the week! Ladder Pos - 6th.

Monday 2/4/2

28 bowlers took to the green with John Dwight and Tim Stapleton from Tungamah claiming the cash. Jock McQualter and Brian Batty were runners up and the jackpot was claimed by Dave Carruthers and Shane Howard, visitors from Burham Heads along with Ian Price and Pam Dodman.

Wednesday Monthly 2 Bowls Triples. Monthly sponsor Belmores Wealth

The second monthly triples was once again well supported with 48 players contesting for a prize pool of $630.

It was great to see Club Mulwala combination of Brad Mitchell, Robo Lockwood and Willy Lockwood taking out first place.

Runners up were J Jones, L spencer and G Murnane. 3rd place G Goudie, P Velardo and M Scown. These days are always played in such a competitive but good spirited fashion.

Many thanks to the tireless volunteers in the kitchen, bar, match committee, board members, raffle sellers and greens helpers.

So proud of the members of our club who just pitch in! Please support Wangaratta in their next event and our last one for the year on Wed, Dec 11. Contact Bert Tait or place your name on the sheet out the front of the club.

Club Championships

The Mens and Ladies Club Singles is the most prestigious event and our finalists this year are so evenly matched it’s hard to tip a winner.

The mens finalists are Ian Woods (aka the original moniker of Woodsy) ..could this be the year Woodsy ?

And our own Club Coach and extremely experienced Michael Szarbo aka Zarbs.

The Ladies final has club stalwart and multiple Club Championships winner Evelyn Calder (aka Ev lol). Facing off against newly arrived Aust Open Champion, State champion and all round champ Claire Sanders.

No club nickname as yet but it’s coming!

Who will prevail and be the 2024 club champion? Get down and support them on Friday, December 6 at 2pm.

Over 60s

The boys were off to Corowa Civic for the Jim Carter Day. Not an auspicious day for one of our teams, however Robbie Wickham’s rink were unlucky not to claim 3/3 just going down by 2 shots on the very last end of the day.

Keep up the enthusiasm guys, it’s great to see.

State Finals

Mixed Pairs

As Brian Taylor would say …WOWEE! What an amazing effort by our YBC players!

An all YBC Grand final for a place in the State Finals.

We had 6 out of the last 8 players across the 2 Semi Finals with Ian Woods and Ros King beating Claire and Gary Sanders into 1 Grand Final spot, and Evelyn Calder and Michael Szabo playing Anne Miles and Ian Brimblecombe to secure the other spot.

The grand final was an epic contest between 4 talented and deserving players. With 2 ends to go it was level pegging at 11 all.

With one end to go it was Woodsy/Ros13, Zarbs/Ev 11.

And the winners are…. Woodsy and Ros 13 to Zarbs & Ev 12 .

Well done to all of you, so very impressive! Good luck at State finals week Woodsy and Ros.

Men’s Pairs

The other YB player through to the State Finals is Gary Sanders who teamed up with Peter McLarty who impressively won through their section and then the final undefeated!

What an amazing feat you guys. Huge congratulations and wishing you so well at State Finals week!

Congratulations also, to all YBC entrants who did well across all formats of the regional State Sectionals and represented themselves and our club so well.

YMGCR Bowls

Midweek Pennant

The A1s played host to Wangaratta last Tuesday and it was the visitors who made a clean sweep of the game: Wangaratta 60 shots and 14 points to YMGCR 41 shots and 0 points.

Keeping their opponents’ minds on the job, for the entire game, was the rink of Ian Febey (L), Peter Lidgerwood (2), Neil Loveridge (3) and Ray Irvine (S), who went down 14 shots to Wangaratta 18 shots.

The A1s are now in 6th place on the ladder and next week face a challenging essay when they play Wodonga, at Wodonga.

In contrast the A2s travelled to Wangaratta and had a strong all rinks win. Final scores after the 63rd end saw YMGCR 69 shots and 14 points to Wangaratta 44 shots and 0 points.

Leading the charge for YMGCR was the rink of Cliff Morton (L), Marcia McGrillen (2), Vic Brincat (3), and Ian Keat (S), who cruised to a 24-shot win over Wangaratta, who managed 11 shots.

Also rising to the occasion were Sue Evans (L), Judy Leeson (2), Greg Fisher (3) and Allan Goudge (S), who won well 26 shots to Wangaratta 15 shots.

The A2s are now in 5th place on the ladder and face another away trip to Moira next week.

Wednesday Social Bowls

A light muster of only 12 players participated last Wednesday, which is the lightest roster for some time, since the relaunch of Wednesday Social.

The winners were, Les Balfour (S), and Barb Tennyson (L), who took home $50 and a drink card each. The Consolation Prize went to Kerry Kinnane (S), and Rob Lidgerwood (L), who shared $30.

The first Lucky Number prize of $10 went to Kerry Kinnane. The second Lucky Number prize went to Barb Tennyson.

In mind of the light numbers last week, it’s probably a good time to remind players from YMGCR and bowlers from surrounding clubs, along with visitors, that the Wednesday Social format is now nominated 3 bowl pairs over 1 game of 20 ends.

Visitors and players from surrounding clubs are still welcome. Visitors and players from other local clubs please include a contact telephone number when adding your name to the entry lists at the bowls office.

Weekend Pennant

The A1s entertained Rutherglen last Saturday and it was YMGCR leading early in the game, but after the 84th end was completed, it was Rutherglen who won the day. Rutherglen 88 shots and 16 points to YMGCR 71 shots and 2 points. All was not lost though with the rink of Chris Horne (L), Bill Jenkins (2), Anne Miles (3), and Ian

Brimblecombe, after a see sawing struggle, winning 23 shots to Rutherglen 18 shots. The A1s now find themselves in 6th place facing an away fixture at Wodonga next weekend, which is never an easy assignment.

The A2s played Wodonga at home and in a hard-fought encounter went down 74 shots and 4 points to Wodonga 84 shots and 14 points.

Winning well for YMGCR and pocketing a valuable 2 points were Doug Wheeler (L), Cliff Morton (2), Vic Brincat (3), and Neil Loveridge (S), who beat their opponents 25 shots to 14 shots.

The A2s are currently in 5th place on the ladder and next week play host to Tungamah at the Golf Club.

Chiltern hosted the A5s last Saturday and after a tightly contested affair it was Chiltern 57 shots and 12 points to YMGCR 55 shots and 2 points.

Boarding the bus for the journey home with 2 points in their pockets were Marie Morffew (L), Ross Lloyd (2), Noel Millar (3), and Ian Morffew (S), who won 21 shots to Chiltern 16 shots. The A5s are in 6th place on the ladder and next week host Wodonga at the Golf Club.

Bloke’s Day on Oaks Day

Last week’s edition of the Chronicle featured photographs from the annual Bloke’s Day on Oaks Day charity tournament. One photograph’s caption advised that the tournament was in aid of Friends in Common.

While Friends in Common is a marvellous charity, which deserves our support, the Blokes Day tournament is run to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer with all monies raised going to Prostate Cancer research.

Until next week, good bowling.
