Avenel Bowls Club officially launched the 2024-25 season with an open day on Sunday, September 22.

Octogenarian Ruth Underwood rolled the first jack for the new season and nonagenarian Ruth King bowled the first ball.

With nearly 70 years of bowls experience between them, these two life members are at the heart of the Queen St club.

With an accurately placed jack by Underwood followed by a bowl just millimetres from being a resting toucher by King, the pair showed their lawn bowls skills are ageing like fine wine and they are still bowling with the precision that bought them success for many years in pennant competition.

The day's guests were from Nagambie Bowls Club, and after president Marion Gittus’ official welcome, 48 bowlers enjoyed a hotly contested but fun game of bowls, followed by a sumptuous afternoon tea.
