Benalla Lawn Tennis Club hosts two tournaments over six days

All together: The competitors in the 2024 OC JC 68th Inter-Regional Country Championships Victoria.

The amount of high class tennis on show over a six-day spell at the Benalla Lawn Tennis Club could have rivalled the Australian Open.

The club held its 98th annual tennis tournament from January 2 to January 4 and then hosted the 2024 OC JC 68th Inter-Regional Country Championships Victoria from January 5 to January 7.

There were worries that heavy rain on the evening of January 2 would damage the grass courts but hard work from club volunteers meant that the courts were in perfect condition throughout the Benalla competition.

It was only on the afternoon of the sixth day of play on January 7 that matches had to be abandoned due to heavy rain.

The big prize: Tamatha Harding, Peter Davis, Gail O'Brien and Mayor Danny Claridge with the Australian Open trophies.

Mayor Danny Claridge spoke to a large crowd of spectators at the opening ceremony of the Inter-Regional Country Championships Victoria on January 5 and described the benefits the tournaments have for the community.

“Council’s commitment to promoting healthy and active lifestyles is a major motivator in hosting regional sporting events like the Inter-Regional Country Championships,” Cr Claridge said.

“Benalla Rural City is proud to support clubs like the Benalla Lawn Tennis Club in creating avenues for fitness, social connections and a strong sense of community.

“We are also thrilled to have participation this week from tennis clubs across the state, with hundreds of people visiting Benalla for this event.

“Hosting regional events like this is important for our tourism economy, as well as having positive benefits for creating an active local community.

“I’m sure everyone will have a fantastic time and hope our visitors get a chance to enjoy some of the attractions our region has to offer.”

The overall winners of the Inter-Regional Country Championships Victoria were Barwon Region Tennis with a total of 303 points.

The runners-up was Loddon Campaspe with 265.5 points.

A highlight for spectators and players who attended the Benalla Lawn Tennis Club on January 4 and 5 was the opportunity to have their photo taken with the Australian Open trophies.
