Berrigan kick-starts finals series

The Berrigan Football Netball Club was kept busy by a strong finals crowd on Saturday.

Berrigan was given the honour of kicking off the Picola and District League finals on Saturday, hosting the first elimination finals.

While a cold day with drizzling rain at times, the club said it did not not deter the crowd or the enthusiasm.

The committee had put in the hard work during the previous week and the ground and amenities were looking good, all in readiness for a great day of action.

With four games of football and seven games of netball, involving clubs from all over the league footprint, the canteen workers were kept on their feet, as were those manning the front gate.

In footy, the fourths game was hotly contested between Strathmerton and Tungamah, with Tungamah coming away with the win.

Berrigan’s thirds tackle Strathmerton, with the home team sadly bowing out of the finals.

As the drizzle cleared, the Deniliquin Rovers took to the field to take on Katunga in the reserves grade. Deni lives to fight another day.

In the main game, Katandra fought it out against the Deniliquin Rovers who, despite losing to Katandra just a week earlier by 100 or so points, dug in and pushed the Cats to work for every possession. In the end Katandra were too strong and took home the win.

On the courts, Stathmerton beat Tungamah in A-grade, Katunga outplyed Mathoura in B-grade, Tungamah defeated Rennie in C-grade and Waaia defeated Strathmerton in C-reserve.

In the junior grades, Jerilderie outplayed Tungamah in under-17s, Waaia’s under-15s defeated Blighty and Strathmerton progress in under-13s after defeating Waaia.

“The Berrigan Football Committee would like to thank all the volunteers who contributed to making sure we provided a great venue for the final and all needs were met,” the club said.

“The finals are a great opportunity to showcase our facilities and to raise some much-needed funds through the bar and canteen.”

Two more local clubs get their turn at hosting finals this weekend, with the first qualifying round at Blighty on Saturday and second qualifying round in Jerilderie on Sunday.

Local sides playing this weekend are as follows:

QF1 at Blighty - Berrigan fourths footballers; Berrigan C-grade netballers; Berrigan under-17s netballers.

QF2 at Jerilderie - Jerilderie fourths footballers.
