‘Bigger and better’: GVBBL makes its long-awaited return

Goulburn Valley Bush Bash League is back and it’s returning with a bang according to tournament organiser Dave D’Elia.

Season three of the region’s newest Twenty20 competition kicks off on Sunday with all four teams descending on Shepparton’s Deakin Reserve.

Once again the round-robin style tournament will consist of the CPW Panthers, Hurley’s Hotel Hounds, JD Crushers and the SRP Mud Dogs.

It has been almost two years since we last witnessed the Bush Bash, but it’s safe to say that the franchise owners have seriously upped their game in the hiatus.

All four teams have landed multiple big fish — headlined by none other than former Australian Test fast bowler James Pattinson.

D’Elia, who was one of the co-founders of the league, said anticipation was palpable among the players and teams.

“It’s so good to have it back after a bit of time off and it’s exciting to come out with a bang,” he said.

“The players who have jumped on this year are very talented cricketers and the franchise owners have done a terrific job in bringing them in. It’s also really exciting for our local guys as well, it’s new ground for them in terms of playing alongside high-calibre players.

“We’re back bigger and better and we’re gaining some traction ahead of this weekend.”

This year league welcomes Frogbox — a live-streaming product that will hit the action into the comfort of your own home.

“Frogbox have come on board and they’ve donated us a Frogbox,” D’Elia said.

“They provide a camera and everything will be streamed on our Youtube page.”

For returning supporters of the Bush Bash they can expect the usual suspects which have made it a smash hit since its inception in 2020.

Food and refreshments will be available, there will be a DJ spinning tracks between overs and plenty of on-field highlights.

Admission will once again be free.

For those new to the competition, the SRP Mud Dogs are chasing a three-peat of silverware after two seasons of dominance.

Hurley’s Hotel Hounds are clearly the side to beat on paper, while CPW Panthers and JD Crushers will fly under the radar.

D’Elia hoped that the star talent on offer would help put bums on seats.

“Hopefully we get some really good games of cricket,” he said.

“What I would say to anyone who is deciding whether to attend, come along and look at our locals as they take on the marquee signings.

“I know that they (local cricketers) are all excited and keen to play and if they’re talking about it then that must mean that we should get some fantastic cricket.”
