Brigade goes into season break on top

Tyler Kenny appeals for the Kyabram Redbacks unbeaten under-10 team, which won at Cooma Recreation Reserve against Tatura last week.

Kyabram Fire Brigade’s under-17 team will resume the Goulburn Murray Cricket season on January 17 as the top ranked team in the top junior age division.

A nine-wicket win against Bamawm-Lockington United, with almost six overs remaining, gave the team a 3-1 win-loss record at the Christmas break after a Twenty20 win at Northern Oval.

BLU won the toss and batted, an 18-run three-over opening stand ending when Oscar Carver took the first wicket.

Six overs later BLU was 5-34 after Wil Harrison and Oliver Barnett took two wickets apiece.

A strong middle order partnership of 22 ended when Carver took his second wicket and was followed by two wickets for Ben Chapman.

BLU was 9-80 at the end of its 20 overs, leaving Oscar Carver and Hamish Stewart to wipe 70 runs off the target when they retired with 30 runs to their credit

Stewart took 28 balls to register his total before Archer Backway and Marley Gordon saw the team to victory without losing a wicket.

Austin Thomson’s four-wicket haul for the Redbacks in the under-10 game was a season highlight for his team.

· Tongala and Kyabram Fire Brigade under-11 teams played a Monday evening fixture at Brose Reserve that was again dominated by the undefeated Fire Brigade unit.

A third 150-plus run score was recorded by the team on the back of Oscar and Archie Andison, Levi Cleveland and Eli Coombs continuing their outstanding seasons.

Coombs was 26 not out from 15 balls as his team scored 174, then he and Zayden Scapin both took two wickets as Tongala was 58 at the end of its 20 overs.

A week earlier Coombs had made 32 from 15 balls and is a star on the rise with the club.

For Tongala, Nate Chandler made 10 not out.

The under-11 season does not resume until Friday, February 7.

· Kyabram Redbacks’ A-grade team sits mid-pack at the Christmas break of Cricket Shepparton’s under-12 season.

A Friday night win in the final round before Christmas (competition resumes on January 17) came after Old Students managed 4-81 in 20 over and the Redbacks scored 6-86 in reply.

Aiden Drew was the pick of the Kyabram bowlers, taking 2-7 from his two overs.

He was supported by Mitchell Melverton (1-6) as all four wickets fell late in the Old Students innings.

Zavier Parsons was the match-winner for Kyabram, smashing 31 runs not out from 15 balls and supported by Lenny Perrella (13 retired) and Lucas Mangan (also 13 retired).

Redbacks fielder Liam Parsons takes this return ahead of wicketkeeper Tyler Kenny as the Tatura batter makes his ground.

· In the Cricket Shepparton under-12 B-grade competition the Redbacks sit second at the Christmas break after another convincing win.

They lost the toss, but restricted Old Students to 108 from their 20 overs — thanks largely to Oliver Dervish’s 2-9 from four overs.

Rhys McKiernan and Dane Matthews provided support, before combining with Tyler Nicholson and Dervish to score 133 from 20 overs.

Dervish made 22, Nicholson 20 and McKiernan 15, all from 17 deliveries, while Matthews also made it to double figures.

· Kyabram Redbacks’ under-10 team won its fifth straight game against Tatura at Cooma Recreation Reserve last week.

Choosing to bat after winning the toss it was Liam Parsons who hit three boundaries in his score of 15, supported by Tyler Kenny (11) and Max McLay as the Redbacks finished with 138 from 20 overs.

Austin Thomson then produced an amazing spell of bowling that was rewarded with four wickets in three overs.

McLay took two wickets, as did Kenny, Tatura finishing with 106 from its over allocation.
