Cricket try outs

The pinnacle of the junior cricket rep pathway within Riverina is the Colston-Scammell Shield, and coaches have started the selection process.

Under-16 cricket hopefuls started the try outs at the Deniliquin Stadium on Sunday.

The open try outs for the under-16s 2023 squad made use of the stadium’s indoor facilities due to the expected wet weather.

The sessions were open to all season 23/24 under-16s players and was the first of three sessions to select a squad.

The second and third sessions will be held in Moama and Cobram respectively.

More information is available from the Southern Riverina Cricket Council Facebook page.

Lights cancelled

Rising Murray River levels has forced the cancellation of the Moama Lights.

Murray River Council reluctantly made the call late Thursday afternoon.

Water was rising too high at Horseshoe Lagoon, becoming dangerously close to the compound housing the light and sound equipment of the festival.

Those who purchased tickets for this year’s light show should receive an email with information about the cancellation and received instructions regarding a refund for the tickets.

Whilst the lights component of the event is cancelled, the rest of the festival will continue through to July 23.

Other components of the festival - including ice skating and food trucks - will continue.

Forest of the fallen

A temporary installation had heads turning in the Deni CBD on Saturday.

On the Cressy Street side of the Warring Gardens, a number of signs on bamboo garden stakes were installed.

Titled Forest of the Fallen, it detailed stories of COVID-19 impacts and injuries.

While done without Edward River Council knowledge or permission - which is normally a requirement for events using the gardens - council’s CEO Phil Stone personally investigated on Saturday and was assured the installation would cause no damage to the gardens.

Pigeon races

Did you notice an increase of feathered friends in the skies above Deni on Sunday?

At 8.35am, more than 2700 birds were released as part of the Deniliquin Pigeon Race.

The birds were released in to partly cloudy weather and north westerly wind of 25km/h to 35km/h.

It was a spectacular site as the hundreds of bird separated themselves in to three groups and cleared off to continue the race.

Results for the race can be found by visiting http://www.pigeonrace.net/fed/wpf/results.
