Cats no match for Saints’ blitz

Lockington-Bamawm United has endured a tough outing against Heathcote in the Heathcote District Football League, going down 5.10 (40) to 16.12 (108).

Coming off the back of a 38-point win against Leitchville-Gunbower in round one, the Cats travelled to Barrack Reserve in Heathcote to take on the 2023 grand finalist and were under siege from the opening bounce.

The Saints dominated the term to leave a shell-shocked LBU down by 42 points at quarter-time, having kicked just four behinds in response to Heathcote’s 7.4 (46).

But the Cats stemmed the bleeding in the second term to register their first goal, one of three they kicked to win the term and reel the margin in slightly to 39 points at the main break.

However, the third quarter saw Heathcote once again take command of the game, piling on five goals to LBU’s one as the lead ballooned to 67 points at the final change, with the eventual margin reaching 68 points.

Brodie Collins and Bowden Stone were among the better contributors for LBU in the loss, with Charlie Hinks, Joseph Wolfe and Lachlan Tenace also among the more influential players in the blue and white hoops.

Anthony McMahon rounded out the best players, finishing the day with a team-high three goals, while Thomas Leech and Jeremy Mundie each chipped in with one.

The assignment gets no easier next weekend for the Cats who face another tough opponent in White Hills, a side which was just four points from a grand final berth last season and looks to be in fine form again this year with two wins from as many games.

On the netball court, Lockington-Bamawm United put in a much-improved performance against Heathcote, albeit going down 39-51 at the Barrack Reserve courts.

The Cats recovered from their 42-goal defeat at the hands of Leitchville-Gunbower last weekend to remain competitive against the Saints, a positive sign in just the second game at the helm for new coach Ash Cullen.

For comparison, the Saints played finals last year after finishing fourth, while LBU recorded one win to finish last in the competition.

The Cats will look to improve even further when they host White Hills next week, with the Demons sitting atop the ladder after round two.
