If the Victorian Coalition is elected to government in November Longwood Football Netball Club stands to be one of the big winners.

The state Liberals and Nationals last week announced $150,000 in funding to revamp the club’s ailing facilities.

The funds would be used to revamp the playing surface at Longwood Recreation Reserve and upgrade the drainage.

The Kyabram District League outfit was unable to host an elimination final in August due to a lack of adequate drainage following high rainfall.

The Redlegs would also be able to rebuild their netball facilities for use on game days and on training nights.

Liberal candidate for the state seat of Euroa Brad Hearn believed country sporting clubs across the region needed urgent investment.

“The football and netball clubs across our region desperately need funding to bring their facilities up to scratch,” Hearn said.

“Today’s commitment provides a real solution to the difficulty facing the Longwood rec reserve and fixing these issues.

“I will fight to ensure our region gets the investment it deserves after eight years of neglect.”

Following a visit to the club in September, Nationals candidate for the state seat of Euroa Annabelle Cleeland said she understood the issues the club must deal with.

“Ricki (Shiner) and his Redlegs team showed me just how important this investment is for the club after missing out on hosting a final this year,” Cleeland said.

“Not only did the lack of drainage cost the club money, but it also impacted local charities and community organisations like the CFA who rely on these events to fund raise.

“The Redlegs have a great reputation within the community.

“This playing surface upgrade and new shed will ensure they have the facilities to match their great spirit.”
