Cobram and Strathmerton are the big winners from the weekend’s football and netball action with both outfits climbing their respective ladders.
Cobram has jumped up into sixth spot on the Murray Football League ladder following a gritty 21-point win at home against Tongala.
Despite trailing at the first break by 13 points, Cobram was able to boot eight of the next 11 goals in the match to run out 9.10 (64) to 8.7 (43) winners.
The Tigers’ Harry Beasley was a standout while his teammates Ryan Mele and Marcus Hargreaves provided strong contributions.
Mitch Ward led the way in front of the big sticks with three majors.
Elsewhere, it wasn’t the result Barooga coach Luke Jarjoura hoped for at the weekend.
The Hawks suffered a narrow nine-point defeat at the hands of Finley in a crucial contest that could have big ramifications come the final round of the season.
Jarjoura highlighted the importance of the clash in his side’s hopes of playing finals, with the Hawks now in eighth and one win behind Cobram.
Jayden Geisler, Brodey Rudd, Jack Short and Riley Brooks were the top performers for the Hawks.
It was another tough weekend for the Tigers and Hawks in A-grade netball.
Tongala breezed past Cobram (62-27) and Finley picked up win number three with a 39-17 triumph over Barooga.
In the Picola District Football Netball League, Strathmerton has jumped up into second spot on the ladder after its convincing win over Rennie.
The win sets up a top-of-the-table clash against Waaia on Saturday.
Yarroweyah was unable to get the job done against Picola United and suffered a heavy 190-point defeat.
Steven Stallion was a workhorse all match and ended up with two majors in a best-on display, while Mitch Hill and Nick De Cicco battled hard.
However, the Grasshoppers’ A-grade side continued its impressive 2023 campaign with a 51-34 win over Picola United.
It was a valuable four points for the Hoppers and sees the eighth-placed outfit extend the gap on Mathoura in ninth.
Lastly, Katamatite is strengthening its finals credentials in the seniors following its 191-thumping of Blighty.
Dylan Callard hit double digits and enjoyed a day out with 10 majors while Will Gorman chipped in with seven.
