The Cobram Roar girls took on Albury’s Boomers FC at Glen Park on Sunday, May 5.
The game started well with the Roar having possession most of the first half, but despite this, they weren’t able to convert this into goals.
If the Cobram ladies were having difficulties, the same could be said with the Boomers players who were unable to penetrate the Roar’s sturdy defence.
Cobram goalkeeper Emily Ryan put on a great performance, making some excellent saves, ensuring the Roar girls were still in the game.
The second half saw movement on the scoreboard as Cobram Roar captain Alyssa Iannucci found the back of the net twice in as many minutes.
However, in a case of no good deed goes unpunished Iannucci copped a ball to the face and was forced to retire for much of the rest of the second half.
However, as the game progressed fatigue began to show, as the Cobram girls also had played on Wednesday in the FA Cup semi-final against Albury Hotspurs.
The Boomers capitalised on that fatigue to slide three goals in after the 83rd minute, leaving the final score 3-2 the Boomers’ way.
Despite the loss, Cobram Roar coach Tanner Tekin saw quite a lot of positives.
“It was actually a really good team build-up,” he said.
“It all went well prior to the last seven minutes.”
Tekin praised goal-keeper Ryan, describing her performance as unbelievable.
Praise was also given to Casey Chandler who returned to soccer after a five-week absence due to golf.
“She played really well,” Tekin said.
The Cobram Roar women’s coach said the team’s combination one-two passes were the strongest point and said he was confident the players would learn and build from their defeat when they next play, against Myrtleford Savoy in Cobram.
The Cobram Roar division one women currently sit sixth on the ladder.
In other news, this week is Female Football Week across the country.
On Sunday, May 12, Cobram Roar is hosting a women’s football event, with the main game on the day being the division one women’s game at 2pm.
The afternoon celebrations will kick-off from 11am and will celebrate all female players, volunteers, supporters and committee members, with grazing tables, drinks and raffles.
The FA Cup semi-final against Albury Hotspurs ended in a 6-0 defeat for the Cobram Roar.
